The Goldfish Project

Today Dustin, Ethan and I joined some other Regent's students participating in the Goldfish Project. A new friend here from America has started this catfish farming project for the disabled in this area and it was a privilege to assist the project today. People that are disabled in the Sattahip province of Thailand are given 500 Baht/month for assistance, that is $15 US. It is very difficult to survive on such a small amount. The Goldfish Project assists families with disabled members in constructing concrete fish ponds on their premises, providing 3 months fish food and 300 baby catfish to get their enterprises begun. Regent's school has helped construct 6 concrete fish ponds and today was on hand as the catfish were delivered to their new homes. After 4 months the catfish should be mature enough to sell. One family we met today made 9000 Baht in 4 months. That $270 may sound like a small amount but it is very important to someone that has been surviving on $15/month. Each family decides how they want to sell their mature catfish. If they are dried before selling they are more valuable. Some sell them to street vendors or restaurants. It was a special event to be a part of here in Thailand today.
